Do the Bengals Have Worries In the Backfield?

Cincinnati-bengals-oakland

The only real news about the Bengals has been about Cedric Benson and his arrest after he allegedly punched a man in the face at a bar in Austin, Texas.

Cedric Benson was undoubtedly the Bengals best player last season and he led the team in their second playoff appearance in twenty years.

If Benson is charged there may be a possible suspension involved, and the question is how will the Bengals offense be without their star running back.

The truth is this won't affect the Bengals as much as people think it will. Yes, Benson is a key to their success, but without him Bernard Scott stepped in and gave the team 100 yards rushing.

I've kept my eye on Bernard Scott and I think he will be a successful player if Benson were benched due to suspension.

Scott is a different style of player, but I wanted to a little more of him last season and I hope to see more of him this season. It may prove that he can be the future running back that will eventually be the starter if he can step in and be affective.

Last season they also brought Larry Johnson on board and he too put in 100 yards after Scott injured his leg. He is no longer with the team, but the Bengals can find a solid running back in free agency that can step in until Benson can return if needed.

This season the Bengals don't need to be as dependent on the running game with the new additions to the receiver and tight end positions. They can now pass first and run second, even though they're not built for that style of play.

There has been articles out that say the Bengals could be looking for a running back already for their first round pick next season, I completely disagree. This is still very early, but if the Bengals even look running back it needs to be later than the first round.

The team will become a title contender if they start getting lineman defensive and offensive. They already have the stars right now. If one were to leave or get injured the replace them, but to enhance a position that is fine the way it is would not be in the teams best interest.

The Benson issue is not as crucial as Ben Roethlesburger and the Steelers problems. This is not going to impact the Bengals as much. The team can still win without Benson, it is just better with him.
